Last time it was a 20m long sei whale stranded on the Inner Beach; this time quicksand, penguin nests to be avoided and, later in the event, a full blown sandstorm on the Outer \/ West Coast beach. Despite the blustery conditions (an understatement) no teams came in early, a testimony to rogainers toughness &#8211; or is that stubbornness to complete their chosen route? Approximately 120 people, ranging in age from four to the their late seventies, competed in fifty teams. Waikoha is mostly steep farmland with pockets of plantation forestry as well as some scrub and more mature bush. The farm also has scattered karst limestone rock detail.<br \/>\nThe NZSCRC was an 8 hour event. The event attracted 56 entrants.<br \/>\nThree other events were held simultaneously (on a subset of the 8 hour course):<br \/>\n\u25cf NZ Secondary School Rogaine Champs (4 hour): 37 entrants<br \/>\n\u25cf 2 hour non-champs: 89 entrants<br \/>\n\u25cf 4 hour non-champs: 21 entrants<br \/>\nA novelty on the day was the thick fog that covered the course for the first 3 hours of the 8 hour event. This tested the navigation skills of many.<br \/>\nHamish Laing from the overall winning team passed on his thanks for setting up a great course and commented \u201cIt was quite tough with all the hills and heat but was a nicely set course which made you think quite hard about which way to go and which controls to go for or leave\u201d.<br \/>\nO Waikato presented medals (as well as That\u2019s it manuka oil product sachets and chocolate) to placegetters in all grades. The medals and prizes were well received.<br \/>\nA koha of $5 per paid entrant was given to the landowner (which is the policy for all Orienteering Waikato rural events). The map provided lots of route choices. Rolling hills were runnable for the <em>rabbits<\/em> and easily achievable for the <em>plodders<\/em> and there were climbs for the more serious. What a wonderful course over such interesting terrain. Mostly the climbs were not long or steep unless you ventured to the far corner of the course. The drizzle continued for most of the day at varying intensity but is was not cold and the ground just soaked things up so it was not slippery. The start at midday saw competitors head out into the heat. Hydration was going to be a major factor. If you were lucky and had gained some height there was a gentle cooling breeze. On the flat there were lakes and tarns which were very tempting. You could share these with the P\u016bteketeke (NZ &#8220;Bird of the Century&#8221;). Evening brought some respite from the heat and soon the heavens opened to their glory. You can see why this area is a &#8220;dark sky reserve&#8221;. A rest for those of us that needed it involved lying on your back and gazing at the heavens. This year the event head quarters was at the Woodchester Station inland from Parnassus.<br \/>\nEach year becomes notorious for something. Snow, rain, wind, electric fences &#8230; This year was mud! Three quarters of the course involved trudging through mud. Sometimes deep threatening to pull off your shoes or boots. Very tricky on climbs and descents. Everyone at the finish showed the affects of several close encounters involving face plants or seated slides. The hot days leading to the event turned less hot on the day. There was a good turnout which, although the organisers only set out to break even, should result in a reasonable surplus to pass on to Isaac Pawley, who is a key member of the Golden Bay High School Adventure Racing Team, but who has recently been diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition which will require him to be domiciled in Christchurch for the next twelve months.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The winners of the 3 hour event were Georgia Whitla, reigning mixed team national rogaine champ, and her partner Pat Higgins They visited all the controls in just over two hours. It wasn&#8217;t a surprise that they cleared the course but the time was fantastic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Of local interest was the 3rd place achieved by Shane Ricketts and team. Shane is the manager of the farm on which the event was predominantly held.\u00a0 Although this would have given him a local&#8217;s knowledge advantage, he and his team had never rogained before and the distance and height gain still had to be achieved no matter how familiar they were with the terrain. The course was very well laid out for a competition event with not obvious choices and as a consequence teams scattered in all directions. Check points were not close together and route choice was a major factor. The race HQ was situated in the center of the course with a well stocked hash house in the southern section. The flatter area to the west required very good navigation while to the east the Takitimus beckoned. Top teams planned for the flatter areas during daylight and headed for the hills in the night.
